2002 Lake Superior ProRally Report

Doug Havir, recently crowned ProRally rookie of the year, finished 11th overall in a rented Vermont SportsCar prepared WRX STi at the Lake Super ProRally based out of Houghton Michigan. Competition took place on the tarmac and gravel national forest and county roads on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The Lake Superior ProRally is regarded as the oldest, meanest and toughest ProRally event in the US. The rally features a wide range of driving conditions with roads that range from smooth to rough and from slow and twisty to fast and flowing. Also thrown in the mix is the famous Brockway Mountain stage which is 100% tarmac. ProRally drivers must also contend with the notoriously unpredictable Upper Peninsula weather which this year ranged from clear and dry to heavy wet snow. All of these variables make the Lake Superior ProRally the ultimate test of driving skill.
The CPD Racing Team of driver Doug Havir and co-driver Scott Putnam finished the Lake Superior ProRally in 11th place overall, seventh in Open class. Havir reported no serious problems with their effort, other than trying to cope with the adverse weather conditions on Friday night.
After rolling and heavily damaging his yellow Open class Subaru WRX at the previous event, Doug rented Vermont SportsCar’s WRX STi for LSPR. Doug was recently named ProRally rookie of the year after several impressive top ten finishes this year in the SCCA ProRally Championship.
