Subaru Brataroo Takes Second in Shoot-Out Modified Class at Goodwood Festival of Speed

Chichester, UK — Making its UK debut, Subaru Motorsports USA’s Brataroo 9500 Turbo thrilled fans at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Hillclimb Shootout with Travis Pastrana behind the wheel, placing second in the Shoot-Out Modified class and sixth overall in a standout overseas debut for Subaru’s newest Gymkhana machine.

Built by Subaru Motorsports USA and technical partner Vermont SportsCar as a modern tribute to the 1978 Subaru BRAT, the Brataroo arrived at Goodwood in the tradition of Subaru’s most outrageous Gymkhana builds. Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter Subaru BOXER engine producing 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque, the Brataroo was created for high-speed slides, massive jumps, airborne control, and even skimming across water – hardly a clean sprint up a paved hill. Its active aerodynamics, designed to aid both high-speed stability and control in the air, only added to the car’s unique approach to Goodwood’s 1.16-mile course.

That made its pace up the hill all the more impressive. Pastrana set a 46.77-second run in Sunday’s dust-covered Shootout Final, briefly taking the overall lead before ultimately finishing second in the Shoot-Out Modified class and sixth overall. The result continued Subaru’s run of turning Gymkhana-bred spectacle machines into serious Goodwood Shootout contenders, following the Airslayer STI and Family Huckster before it.

The Shoot-Out Modified class placed the Brataroo alongside some of the wildest machinery at the Festival, including purpose-built Pikes Peak machines, rallycross cars, and drift-derived builds. Pastrana finished just behind World RX star Johan Kristoffersson in class, leaving Goodwood with both a strong result and the feeling that more speed remains in the car.

“What a car, and what a build from the team,” Pastrana said. “I really wanted to beat Kristoffersson there, and I think we left a little on the table, which isn’t usually like me.”

“We were only about three-tenths off where I was hoping to be, and on a hill that fast, any mistake can catch you. It was still one heck of a run, and I’m definitely excited to keep showing the world what this car can do.”

Pastrana’s Goodwood weekend also included a special return to Subaru rally history, as he took to the Festival’s rally stage behind the wheel of Colin McRae’s Subaru Legacy. The run added a heritage moment to a weekend already centered on Subaru performance, connecting the Brataroo’s modern Gymkhana spectacle with the rally legacy that helped define the brand.

The Brataroo’s Goodwood debut continues Subaru Motorsports USA’s recent run of memorable Festival of Speed performances, from Pastrana’s podium runs in the Airslayer STI and Family Huckster to WRX: Project Midnight’s success as a purpose-built tarmac machine. This time, Subaru’s newest Gymkhana star proved that even without a water crossing or gap jump, it could hold its own against some of the most specialized cars on the hill.
